Emissions Inventory for the Monterrey Metropolitan Area

Financed by: Monterrey Metropolitan Environmental Fund (FAMM) and the Nuevo León Council.

Participants: Government of Nuevo León.

Location: Monterrey Metropolitan Area, Mexico.

Year: 2020 - 2022.

Project description

The project updated the emissions inventory of criteria pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs) for base year 2018, covering the 18 municipalities that make up the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (AMM), using the best available information to strengthen air quality management tools and support policy formulation.

The Clean Air Institute led the technical development of the inventory. The main activities included:

  • Reviewing and analyzing the state of the art in emissions inventories, in light of the best available information for the AMM.

  • Quantifying point (fixed) sources under state and federal jurisdiction, road and non-road mobile sources, area sources, and natural sources.

  • Aligning results with Mexico's National Emissions Inventory.

  • Assessing the feasibility of continuous, periodic updates to the inventory going forward.

The updated inventory provided the essential technical foundation for the formulation of the Comprehensive Air Quality Management Plan for the Monterrey Metropolitan Area (PIGECA) 2023–2033.
