Financed by: United Nations Environment Programme.

Location: Latin America and the Caribbean.

Year: 2021.

Project description

This project aimed to strengthen regional cooperation on Air Quality in Latin America and the Caribbean and to facilitate information exchange and capacity building in LAC countries. As part of this project, CAI:

• Provided technical assistance and supported international policy dialogue activities to update the Regional Action Plan of the Intergovernmental Network on Air Pollution, including developing a resource mobilization strategy based on the regional action plan adopted by the XIX Forum of Ministers held in Los Cabos in 2014;

• Updated the Regional Action Plan of the Intergovernmental Network on Air Pollution, which significantly contributes to reducing emissions of short-lived atmospheric and climate pollutants, while also achieving co-benefits in health, climate, and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);

• Supported the design and implementation of information exchange and capacity-building activities on priority air quality issues in the region;

• Collaborated on the communication and outreach activities of the Intergovernmental Network.

Additionally, CAI developed regional webinars where, with the participation of international experts, relevant topics were addressed to strengthen the region's capacities in air quality management, as well as to share progress in the region and increase commitment to reducing atmospheric emissions. Moreover, CAI contributed to the activation of the LAC Intergovernmental Network on Air Pollution and became a regional leader, providing on-the-ground support to national and subnational authorities for the preparation of integrated regional/national/local plans to address climate change and air pollution.
