Building the Health, Equity, and Economic Case for Investment in Clean Air in Amazonian Cities
Financed by: Clean Air Fund (CAF).
Participants: Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and Institute Ar.
Location: Brazil.
Year: 2025.
Project description
The project developed health, equity, and economic arguments for air quality investments in Brazil’s Amazonian urban centers. This initiative sought to provide evidence, policy dialogue, and stakeholder engagement mechanisms to enable urban clean air action in the Amazon, integrating the co-benefits of climate, public health, and social justice.

Under the leadership of EDF, the Clean Air Institute provided technical expertise, local coordination, and stakeholder engagement capacity to support the implementation of this project. The main activities developed focused on:

-
Contributing to contextual analysis, policy mapping, and data input to support the identification of major air pollution sources, priority interventions, and institutional governance dynamics, with a regional focus on the 20 largest urban centers of the Legal Amazon, including Manaus.
-
Reviewing and providing detailed feedback on draft reports, policy frameworks, and technical documents developed by EDF, including a case study and a policy paper focused on Manaus, as well as a regional report covering the main challenges and opportunities regarding air quality in Brazilian Amazon cities.
Additionally, the Institute participated in virtual meetings and workshops with key stakeholders, which served to enrich the various analyses developed.
